Humanities Revolution

A response to the downfall of humanities subjects.

Today, only 8% of students study humanities subjects at A-levels, and this figure is dropping each year. Humanities subjects are essential.
In fact, 58% of graduate entrepreneurs studied humanities subjects. In a world obsessed with technology and the future, it is hard to recognise how important humanities subjects are.
So who is to blame?

"One of the biggest influences on a child's future is their parents or carers. In fact, half of students choose a subject for their GCSEs due to their parents' or carers' influence."

Additionally, 63% of parents or carers reported having discussed the possibility of a STEM career with their child. But parents aren't the only ones influencing these decisions; peers and teachers also exert pressure when it comes to choosing a future path!

My Response?

I created and designed a 53-page magazine celebrating some of the brightest highlights in the humanities. To make it easy for readers to find what resonates with them, I organised it into clear sections:

  • Literature & Language

  • Art & Design

  • History & Heritage

  • Philosophy & Ethics

Each section featured a compelling case study, such as an overview of the amazing book Brave New World or a spotlight on the groundbreaking Bauhaus school—giving students the chance to explore topics beyond their usual syllabus.

For parents, each section included a spread with data-driven insights on why studying these subjects opens doors, providing the evidence they need to feel confident about these paths for their children.

Finally, each section shared the success story of a young adult who pursued their passion. Each individual took the time to write me a spread about their experiences, such as "Georgia’s Story," a girl who, despite limited support for her dream of fashion design, now showcases her work nationwide and has been fortunate enough to be part of Paris Fashion Week.

Humanities subjects are often overlooked, leading many to believe they lack value in the job market. To challenge this, I spotlighted stories of world-leading figures who all share a humanities background:

  • Debbie Wosskow OBE, co-founder of AllBright

  • Jack Ma, co-founder of Alibaba

  • Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple

These leaders demonstrate that a foundation in the humanities builds skills—such as creativity, communication, and critical thinking—that drive success across any industry.

Hand-Painted

Using a large brush and bold blue paint, I painted each letter, aiming to create a sense of relaxed freedom. This approach complements the overall aesthetic of my the magazine, where I sought to emphasise the individuality inherent in humanities subjects.

I loved the rough texture when the paint was drier, where it almost fought with the paper to get the paint down. It reminded me a lot of some calligraphy I have seen in Japan.
